This was a full artistic liberty costume - I was told to interpret the idea of "the moon dragon", and that I could do whatever I wanted from there.

How did you get the light colors on the black fur? Did you specially airbrush it?

It's opaque acrylic paint, drybrushed (with a small paintbrush) onto the fur.
