Concept art for a Qi-Lin costume. There are far fewer scales on this guy than might traditionally appear on a Qi-Lin, partly for fun, partly for budget.

This is what I might consider a "generic" qi-lin in my style, meaning basically that I could make even major changes to the design for character purposes.

Possibly he should have ears. I'm not sure why I didn't give him ears.

What kind of colors were you thinking? (I know nothing about Qi-Lin, so I don't know what the standard would be.)

I don't know if there is a standard. My initial thoughts were various shades of gold and brownish, but just about anything could work, really.

hmmmm, out of personal prefrence and based on tradition i would do a more bulbous nose and add an upward facing tusk next to the one that is there
and maybe some small dragon whiskers and ears

i did A LOT of research on Qi-lins (aka chi-lin, kirin, kilin, killina) to make this thing [link] as i wanted it cultrally acurate. one of the most over looked aspects of a traditional qi-lin is they have the five sacred Chinese colors red, yellow/gold, blue, white, and black on on their bodies :)
